Ottawa County teachers graduate from boot camp
OAK HARBOR — Eighteen teachers from the Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District, Danbury Local Schools, Genoa Local Schools, Port Clinton City School District and Woodmore Local Schools graduated from Teacher Two during the week of June 13-16 Ottawa County Boot Camp.
The focus of the boot camp was to introduce local teachers to the variety of career paths available in regional companies and the potential career opportunities that exist for local students.
Participating companies included Davis-Besse, Northern Manufacturing, Materion, Catawba Island Club, Magruder Hospital and Logistiq (a division of LEWCO). Teachers were challenged to get involved in employer activities, learn about the variety of products and services, what professional and social skills are needed by local employers, and learn about current and future employment opportunities in each company.
Teachers who attend the boot camp receive graduate credit hours from Ashland University. A final component of the bootcamp was teacher presentations to a panel of local business leaders, peers and Business Advisory Council members.
Participants spoke about their experiences during the bootcamp, what they learned about each company and how they will incorporate the information they learned into their curriculum.
The Ottawa County Teacher Boot Camp was organized by the Ottawa County Business Advisory Council and the North Point Educational Service Center. Havens named after Hayes Building, property manager
FREMONT – A longtime volunteer specializing in trees, he is the superintendent for new buildings and grounds at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
John Havens, who has served as an honorary Hayes presidential nominee and a member of the Board of Trustees, began full-time work in June.
He replaces John Bell, who served as a construction and site manager for more than four decades. Bell retired at the end of May.
“This is my dream job,” Havens said. “I really like the people I work with. I love history and I like the historical trees we have here and the stories behind them.”
Havens holds a degree in Nursery Management from Ohio State University’s Agricultural Technical Institute. He has experience working in a production nursery.
For the past several years, he has volunteered to identify and catalog Spiegel Grove’s more than 1,700 trees. The site is an Arbnet accredited arboretum. He has also organized the Hayes Presidential tree tours and trained staff and volunteers to give these tours.
Havens’ goals for Spiegel Grove include achieving Tier 2 Arboretum status and getting the greenhouse next to the carriage house back into service. The site is currently a level 1 arboretum, meaning there are fewer than 100 species of trees and plants. Tier 2 status applies to 100 or more species, and Spiegel Grove is close to reaching it.
A native of Jackson Township, Havens serves as a trustee in the community. Prior to assuming this position, he owned and operated Color Haven Paint & Supply in Fremont.
