A weekend of old-fashioned fun in Tyler, Canby – Marshall Independent | WHs Answers

Their community festival celebrates Danish heritage. But organizers say some of this year’s Aebleskiver Days events also look back to Tyler’s local culture.

The festival kicks off on Friday with an opportunity for local residents to drive around Tyler’s Main Street.

“We’re having an old-fashioned Friday night” said Diane Borresen, Chair of the Aebleskiver Days Committee. The event is new for this year’s festival, and Borresen said it calls back to the days when young people took their cars downtown and “Beat the Road” She said. There will also be root beer floats and music by The Frogs at Tyler’s Bandshell Park.

Borresen said the concert was also a nod to Tyler’s past and was fun.

“The high school band used to have a concert on Friday nights,” She said.

There is something for everyone at the Aebleskiver Days on Saturday. In addition to child-friendly events such as a petting zoo on the farm, there will also be music and entertainment. La Crescent singing group Apple Annies will perform on Saturday afternoon. Borresen said one of the Annies, Gwynne Mishler, is originally from Tyler. Magician Travis Nye will also perform in the Tyler Bandshell on Saturday, and there will be Pølse – Danish-style hot dogs – Borresen said.

Of course, Aebleskiver Days wouldn’t be complete without the spherical Danish pancakes the festival is named after. Borresen said Aebleskivers remain a popular treat for visitors during the celebration.

The community festival is one that brings people together in Tyler, Borresen said. “People come from all over. It is wonderful.”

Yellow Medicine County Fair time in Canby

The carnival season is in full swing in Southwest Minnesota, and this weekend it’s Yellow Medicine County’s turn for a few days of fun. The Yellow Medicine County Fair begins today in Canby with Children’s Day events in addition to vendors, entertainment, 4-H events and more.

Some of the events planned for the fair are open to visitors to attend. On Friday afternoon, the FFA Ag Olympiad invites participants to test their dexterity and speed in an agricultural relay race. And on Saturday young people can show their darlings at the small animal show.

Daily live music with a variety of styles is planned for the fair for the fair visitors. Polka fans can check out the Larry Olsen Band on Thursday night. On Friday Street Talk plays classic rock tunes and on Saturday the Red Letter Band brings bluegrass and country into the mix.

Grandstand events at the fair will bring back crowd favorites like racers from Watertown’s Casino Speedway, a Demolition Derby and Baja races.
